Once upon a spooky time, there was a tiny village surrounded by thick woods. In its charter [1], there was an old tale. The tale said, “When the moon is full, the ‘Big Bad Beast From The Woods’ comes out to play.” The Big Bad Beast was not very nice. He liked making people feel scared. Very scared. Every full moon, the fear in the village would intensify [2].
In the village lived a small boy. His name was Jack. Jack was only eight years old but he was very brave. He said, “I am not scared of the Big Bad Beast.” Jack’s folks said kids should not stay out late at night without grown-up supervision [3]. But, Jack did not like rules very much.
One cloudy day, Jack sat on a bench [4] near an old, big tree. He was having fun seeing how the leaves [5] fell from the branches. Suddenly, Jack saw something strange. One leaf [5] did not fall straight down. It moved in a complicated [6] pattern in the air and then flew into the small tree hole where woodpeckers lived.
Jack was a curious boy and he had an idea.
He ran home to fetch his dad’s torch. He brought it back to the tree and pointed it into the hole. The light showed an old box. Jack thought, “Perhaps this is a treasure box!” He used a large stick to pull the box out. It was heavier than he thought it was. There was a lock, but it was easy to break because it was so old.
Jack opened the box and inside was a strange stone. This stone was black and shiny. It looked magical. The villagers often talked about magic stones in the old tales. Jack thought, “I have a magic stone now. It can help me make the Big Bad Beast run away.”
That night, Jack decided to call out the Big Bad Beast. His folks were worried. They said, “It can cause injury [7], Jack.” But Jack was ready. He was not innocent [8] anymore. He knew the risks but he wanted to protect his village.
As the moon was full, he took the magic stone to the woods. When he entered the forest, he felt a cold wind. He heard strange noises. He was a little bit scared but he did not run away.
Suddenly, he saw Big Bad Beast. The beast was huge and scary. His eyes were red and teeth were sharp. Jack felt a synthesis [9] of fear and determination to defeat the monster. He remembered the magic stone. The stone was supposed to help him. It was his only hope so he held the stone up high in the air.
A bright light came from the stone. It blinded the beast for a moment. Jack shouted, “I am not scared! Leave my village forever!”
The light from the stone began to grow brighter and brighter until it was like a big white sun. The beast let out a frightening noise and then with a loud pop, turned into a cloud of black smoke that went up into the sky and disappeared.
The magic stone was quiet then. The light had drained [10] out of it. But Jack was not scared now. He knew the beast was gone. He felt safe.
Jack became a hero in his village. His folks said, “Our little boy is brave.” The villagers said, “Our hero.” Every full moon, everyone remembered Jack’s bravery and the magic stone that saved them. Jack was happy because the old fear was gone and his village was safe.
From then on, every child in the village knew the story of Brave Jack and his magic stone. The story became a part of the village’s production [11] with songs and dances during festivals. Jack’s bravery was like an extension [12] to their charter [1] of courage and unity.
The End.
