Once, there was a small town where nothing big ever happened. It was so quiet that one could hear each step [1] that was taken on the street. In that town lived a girl named Lily, who liked to wear her old blue jeans [2] and write poems. She wanted to be a great poet [3] one day.
One dark night when the moon was hidden by clouds, something scary began. Lily was at home, the only light in her room came from a little candle. She liked the small spark [4] it gave off. It made her feel safe and helped her to see to write her poems.
Her parents said, “Lily, don’t waste [5] your time with writing. Study something real.” But Lily wanted to create beautiful words.
That night, she heard a loud sound. “BOOM!” Like something was going to explode [6]. Lily felt scared. She thought it was a disaster [7] happening. She opened her window to look outside for help [8], but there was no one there.
She took a deep breath and told herself, “I will not sit here in fear.” So she put on her jeans [2] and a warm jacket, ready to treat [9] this as an adventure. It was a bonus [10] to her that the town was quiet again when she stepped outside.
Lily walked down the dark path, her heart racing. She couldn’t see much because there was no coverage [11] from the street lights. “Why is it so dark?” she wondered. Suddenly, she heard a cry for help [8].
“Help [8]! Please, someone help [8] me!” It was coming from Mr. Arthur’s house, the old man known for his scary stories.
Lily ran to his house and found Mr. Arthur on the floor. His old lamp had fallen and the candle inside it made a small fire. Lily remembered how to stop small fires with no water. Thanks [12] to her quick thinking, she grabbed a heavy blanket and put the fire out.
Mr. Arthur looked at Lily with wide eyes. “You saved me,” he said. “That could have been a real disaster [7]. Thank you, my dear.”
Lily felt brave and happy she could help [8]. “It’s okay, just stay safe,” she said.
When Lily walked back home, she looked up at the sky. The clouds were gone, and the moon was bright. She smiled. The scary night had turned into a story of bravery. And she knew just what her next poem would be about.
